How to use your custom backdrops
Now that you have your awesome background, lets get it setup!
Google Meet
1. Open Google Meet and join or start a meeting
2. Click the "Apply visual effects" button (camera icon with sparkles)
3. Select "Upload" to add your custom background
4. Choose your downloaded backdrop file
5. Click "Done" to apply the background
Zoom
1. Open Zoom and join or start a meeting
2. Click the arrow next to "Stop Video" and select "Choose Virtual Background"
3. Click the "+" icon to add a new background
4. Upload your downloaded backdrop file
5. Select your new background to apply it
Teams
1. Open Microsoft Teams and join or start a meeting
2. Click the three dots (...) in the meeting controls
3. Select "Apply background effects"
4. Click "Add new" and upload your backdrop file
5. Select your custom background to apply it
Universal Camera Feature (macOS 14+)
macOS 14+ includes a Universal Camera feature that allows you to apply virtual backgrounds system-wide, making it work with any video conferencing app automatically.
Setup Universal Camera:
1. Click the camera icon in the top menu bar (next to other system icons)
2. In the camera control panel, click on "Background"
3. Select "Add Background" or the "+" button
4. Choose your downloaded backdrop file
5. The background will now be available system-wide for all video apps
Pro Tip: Once set up, your custom background will automatically appear in Google Meet, Zoom, Teams, and any other video app that uses your Mac's camera.
Google Meet
1. Open Google Meet and join or start a meeting
2. Your Universal Camera background should automatically apply
3. If not, click the "Apply visual effects" button (camera icon with sparkles)
4. Select your custom background from the available options
5. The background will now be active for all future meetings
Zoom
1. Open Zoom and join or start a meeting
2. Your Universal Camera background should automatically apply
3. If not, click the arrow next to "Stop Video" and select "Choose Virtual Background"
4. Your custom background should appear in the available backgrounds
5. Select it to apply to your video
Teams
1. Open Microsoft Teams and join or start a meeting
2. Your Universal Camera background should automatically apply
3. If not, click the three dots (...) in the meeting controls
4. Select "Apply background effects"
5. Your custom background should be available in the effects panel
Troubleshooting
Background not appearing? Make sure you're using macOS 14 or later and have granted camera permissions to your video apps.
Performance issues? Try reducing the resolution of your background image or closing other camera-intensive apps.
App-specific issues? Some apps may need to be restarted after setting up Universal Camera backgrounds.
